COPPERHEADS CLOSE-OUT 2011
The Coaldale Copperheads had two close games this past weekend, resulting in a 1-1 result. Saturday the Snakes lost 6-5 in overtime after coming back from a 5-2 defecit at one point. The undisciplined play of the Coaldale team resulted in numerous penalty infractions to the detriment of the Copperheads. Sunday evening the Southern division first place leaders, the Cochrane Generals, came to town, fresh after a 15-0 stomping of the Medicine Hat Cubs. The Coaldale crew totally turned their game around, playing a hard, discipined style of hockey before a thrilled home town crowd, eventually beating the Generals 6-4. Colby Murrray, a Lomond native , paced the Copperheads with a natural hat trick, putting Coaldale up 3-0 by the five minute mark of the first period. Danny Wilks took the win in net. That concludes the 2011 portion of Copperheads Hockey, as the Copperheads are on Christmas break until early January. Next home game is January 14th at the "Snake Pit"

The Copperheads put on heavy pressure, trying to tie the game when late in the third the Bisons popped in two quick goals to end all hopes of a Copperhead victory. Although the Copperheads outshot and outplayed Okotoks much of the series, the rock solid goaltending of the Bisons, in addition to thier disciplined style of play, salted away the south division title in the best of seven final.

COPPERHEADS CRUSH FLYERS
The Coaldale Copperheads advanced to the best of seven south division finals with a 11-2 thrashing of the High River Flyers. The best of five affair was a three game sweep, making Copperheads history as they advance to the division finals for the first time in their four year history. The hometown High River crowd was stunned as the Copperheads jumped to a 4-1 lead after the first period. Up 8-1 after the second frame resulted in a chippy third period as the frustrated Flyers were led to the penalty box time after time. The Copperheads kept thier cool, taking advantage of numerous power plays an ending the game in a disciplined fashion.
The Okotoks Bisons finished off their opponents, the Strathmore Wheatland Kings, in three games also, with a 3-2 victory Saturday night. COPPERHEADS WIN FIRST PLAYOFF GAME
The Coaldale Copperheads took the first game in a best of five against the High River Flyers Monday afternoon. A packed Coaldale Sportsplex cheered the Snakes on to a 7-6 victory. COPPERHEADS PLAYOFF PREVIEW
The Coaldale Copperheads ended their regular season this past weekend with three of a possible four points. Saturday night the Snakes thumped the Medicine Hat Cubs 11-1 at the Snake Pit. The Cubs are out of play-off contention and gave a lack lustre effort.
However, Fridays game in High River was a different affair. With the standings already set, and a play-off best of five series against High River a certainty, the last meeting of the season ended in a 2-2 tie. Josh Elliott and Jordan Vincent scored for the Copperheads. Both teams rested key players for the play-offs, while the remaining rosters gave a peek at what this play-off series may bring. And it should be a dandy. The Copperheads record is 21 wins, 11 loses, 1 overtime loss and three ties for 46 points, good for second place in the south division,4 points behind the Okotoks Bisons. High River managed 14 wins 15 losses 4 overime losses and 3 ties for 35 points and third place. Coaldale faced the Flyers four times this season with 2 wins, one tie and a loss. Looking at the last month of play the Copperheads have a 6 wins, 4 losses and two ties while the Flyers sport 4 wins 6 losses and two ties. On paper the Copperheads are odds on favourites, but looking at the last two meetings (a loss and a tie) this series is shaping up to be a good one.
With game one set for Family Day in Coaldale at 3:30 p.m. The Coaldale Sportsplex will be packed as Family Day games have always attracted a full crowd. Game two is set for Tuesday at 7:45 at the "Snakepit" Coaldale Sportsplex with game three in High River on Friday Feb.18 at 8:30 pm. Sunday afternoon the Copperheads faced the Okotoks Bisions on a road trip that battled to salt away first place in the south. The shot clock was indicative of the game as each team peppered 41 shots. Missing top scorer Cam Hurt and physical presence of John Mitdtal from the Copperheads line up didn't help the Coaldale squad cause. The hard fought affair left the Copperheads with a 4-1 loss. Solid goal tending and numerous shots off the goal posts kept the Copperheads off the scoreboard till midway through the third period. The near sell-out hometown crowd enjoyed a fast paced game that saw the Bisons go ahead by one at 11:50 of the first period on a power play marker. The Snakes responded less then a minute later with Riley Honess tying it up. Braiden Bloor turned aside 25 shots while the Copperheads peppered the Bisons with 38 shots. This puts the Copperheads three points ahead of the Bisons, as the two premiere south division teams fight out home advantage throughout the play-offs.

COPPERHEADS WEEKEND ROAD TRIP
The Coaldale Copperheads ended their seven game winning streak this past weeekend. The two game northern division road trip started well with a 10-1 victory over the Rimbey Rock in Rimbey Saturday evening. Jordan Vincent and Darcy Osmond each scored twice to pace the Snakes to their seventh straight victory. The real test came on Sunday when the Coppperheads faced the Blackfalds Ford Wranglers, who occupy first place in the Northern Division. After the first perod Coaldale was up 1-0. A defensive lax in the second had the Wranglers tally three straight times. The Copperheads rebounded with a strong third, but could not overcome the Wranglers second period scoring effort, with a result of a 4-2 final score. The game was typical top end Heritage league play with Coaldale taking four of only six minor penalties assesed. Josh Elloitt and Chris Petty scored for the Copperheads. Next weekends action should be a dandy affair as the Copperheads meet the Okotoks Bisons Saturday January 29th, 8:30 p.m. @ the Coaldale Sportsplex "Snakepit" With the Bisons one point behind the Copperheads for first in the Southern Division, this divisional battle will prove to be the most important match-up thus far this season.

Copperheads Knock Off Top Team
Midtal Paces Coaldale to Huge Win
John Midtal, a third year veteran of the H.J.H.L, paced the Copperheads to their first win of 2011. Midtal, who spent the 08-09 season with the Airdrie Thunder, and the 09-10 season with the Mountain View Colts, has been a great addition to the 2010-2011 edition of the Coaldale Copperheads. The 6' 2" 220 lb power forward totally dominated the league leading Cochrane Generals, punching in two goals, and leading the Snakes in their ferocuios physical game. The Generals, with only two losses thus far, lost number three in front of their stunned home town crowd last Saturday night.
After a slow first period start, the Copperheads picked up the pace after the ten minute mark of the first period and never looked back, beating the Generals in their home barn 5-3.The third goal, late in the third, transpired from a desperate come back attempt, that seen the Generals pull their goalie at approximately the two minute mark. The Snakes were scheduled to play the Medicine Hat Cubs Sunday, but was postponed due to weather. An alternate date to be announced.

On Sunday the team headed up for a matinee bout against their division rivals , the Okotok Bisons. Fatigue was a factor in this, the third game in four days , as the Copperheads got beat soundly 9-2.

COPPERHEADS LOSE TO THUNDER 3-2 IN OT
The Coaldale Copperheads suffered their first loss in regulation Saturday night with a 3-2 loss to the Airdrie Thunder. The Copperheads came out of the gates stronger than their previous outings and found themselves leading by one after a first period goal by Riley Honess. Going into the second, both teams played strong defense and had numerous chances on the powerplay, but remained tied after 40 minutes. The Copperheads would continue to press and extend their lead to 2-0 on a highlight reel goal by Braden Horon early in the third period. The Copperheads outshot the Thunder 29-12 through the first two frames. The Thunder would battle back in the third and shorten the lead to 2-1, with a goal at the 14 minute mark. COPPERHEADS WIN 2010-11 HOME OPENER
The prediction for a strong Copperheads team this year certainly seems true as the local juniors thrashed the Banff Bears 13-3 in thier home opener this past Sunday night at the Snake Pit. Led by Jordan Vincents six goal effort (a new Copperhead record), the 2010 edition certainly dominated in every aspect of the game. A nearly sold out crowd enjoyed the rout, with the Copperheads completely dominating the Banff team both in scoring and physical play. With three players left to cut, the Copperheads should be down to thier final roster by next Saturdays game versus Airdrie ( 7:00pm @ the Coaldale Arena Snakepit). Local goaltender Dallas Knelson put in a strong effort the first half of the game, posting a shut-out, while veteran Braedon Bloor defended against seemingly never-ending power plays in the second half, letting three markers go by in the last half of the game. Airdrie has historically had a top end team every year and willl be a true test for the 2010-2011 Coaldale Copperheads.

FORMER COPPERHEADS PLAYER HIRED AS ASSISTANT The Copperheads are happy to announce that Justin Barnes will be on the bench this season as an assistant coach. Justin played three years in the Heritage League, which started with the Southern Express in in 2005-06 and ended with the Copperheads in 2007-08. COPPERHEADS CLOSE OUT SEASON The Coaldale Copperheads have closed out the 09/10 season, failing to beat out the Medicine Hat Cubs in the first round of the play-offs. Game one in the Hat resulted in a 5-1 loss with defencemen Levi Wiebe with the lone marker.
Game two back home Friday night in the "Snakepit" was a crowd thriller as back to back scoring and end to end rushes from both teams ended with the Copperheads pulling their goalie, Braiden Bloor, in the dying minutes trying to even a 6-5 score. Despite a barrage of shots, the Cubs held on for the victory putting a strangle hold on the Snakes, going up 2-0 in the series.
Scoring for Coaldale was Braden Horon, Cam Hurt, Regan Camrud, Kash Shade and Adam Gilmore.
Specialty teams and goaltending were a factor in game #3 Saturdays game, as the Copperheads pulled out a 6-3 road victory. Danny Wilks got the call and responded by turning away 53 shots in net. The cubs struck first and early as it was 3-0 Medicine Hat after the first period. The Copperheads never recovered and eventually gave up the game ending the series with a 6-2 defeat. COALDALE CONNECTION PACES COPPERHEADS Three Coaldale kids, back in the Atom "A" Foothills League of the early 2000's, struck fear in every team they played. The line of Levi Wiebe,James Foxall and Josh Elliott combined for more than 150 goals that season. Well, a few years later and after thier hockey careers sending them in different directions, they are again thrilling Coaldale fans, as collectively they scored 6 of 8 goals to down the Ponoka Stampeders 8-4 in H.J.H.L league action Saturday night at the "Snakepit". Foxall netted a hat trick, with the now defencemen Wiebe contributing two from the point and Elliott adding a single. Other Copperhead scorers were Reagan Camrud and Braedon Horon.
Sunday seen the Copperheads head to Okotoks to tangle with the Bisons, the power house of the H.J.H.L. With only two losses this whole season thus far, the Copperheads went in knowing it would be a tough match, with the score ending up 8-2 for the Bisons. Foxall netted a great low stick side goal with Taber native Ty Odland hitting the inside top corner for the second goal, a power play marker.
Next weekend action wraps up the regular season with a Friday(Feb.12) road game versus the High River Flyers @ 8:30 p.m. Saturday sees great home game action as the Medicine Hat Cubs come to town for their final appearance of the season. This will be the "game" of the season thus far, as the Copperheads will meet the Cubs in the first round of the best of 5 divisional final, most likely @ Medicine Hat starting Tuesday Feb.16. Holiday Monday, Family Day is "Fan Appreciation" night as the Copperheads meet the Banff Bears on home ice @ 4:00 p.m. There will be free giveaways and promotions as the Copperheads show appreciation to the best fan base in the league.

COPPERHEADS SPLIT WEEKEND The Coaldale Copperheads took two of a possible four points, winding up their January schedule. January was the toughest road grind of the season, with only 3 of 11 games at home. To add to the challenge was the announcement that head coach Frank Fazio was leaving the Copperheads, as an unexpected transfer/promotion had been offered to him in Prince Albert. Assistant coach Cody Moskal stepped up to the head coaching position as Coaldale juniors faced of against the Strathmore Wheatland Kings Saturday night in Strathmore. A solid team effort resulted in a 3-1 victory, with Carter Little Shields three point effort pacing the Snakes with 1 goal and two assists. Rounding out the scoring was Devery Edmonds and Cam Hurt. Braiden Bloor turned aside 32 of 33 shots for the win.
Sunday morning early it was straight on the bus for a 1:15 puck drop in Okotoks. The Bisons, sporting a 26-2-2 record, best in the Heritage Junior League, were caught flat footed as the Copperheads, quickly jumped to a two nothing lead by midway in the first period. The quick, physical game turned tempers awry as the Copperheads lost composure late in the first resulting in a 2-2 tie heading into the dressing rooms after the first. The snakes held on till mid game, when two goals in the second put the Bisons up 4-2. As the fast pace and heavy hitting game moved into the third period, the road weary Coaldale crew wore out, as the top team in the league put three more behind Danny Wilks for the 7-2 final. Braedon Horon scored one and assisted the other goal scored by Riley Honess.
The resulting two points puts them four points behind Medicine Hat, with each team having 5 games remaining. It looks certain the Copperheads will face the Cubs in the first round of the play-offs. Next weekends schedule has the Snakes up against Ponoka at 8:30 at the Coaldale "Snake Pit" Sportsplex, followed by another trip up to Okotoks for a 1:15 start against the Bisons. Fans are reminded to use up all season tickets, as there are only three home regular season games left in the 09/10 season. With a possibility of still finishing second, and gaining home advantage on the Cubs, the remainder of the season promises to be "play-off" style hockey for all to enjoy.

COPPERHEADS HOCKEY ON THE ROAD The Coaldale Copperheads were on the road the last two weekends starting with a north division road swing.
The Snakes took on the Red Deer Vipers, one of the perennial power houses of the Heritage League. Despite being out shot 36-28, and net minder Braiden Bloor being called up to Drumheller of the A.J.H.L., veteran Danny Wilks turned in his best effort of the season, leading Coaldale to a 3-1 victory. The Copperheads disciplined play led to almost twice as many power play opportunities as the Vipers, resulting in three specialty team goals by Braden Horon, Adam Gilmore and Ty Odland.
Sunday afternoon found the Copperheads in the farthest North Division team, the Ponoka Stampeders. The Stampeders, who have struggled the last couple of years, continue to occupy the basement of the Heritage League. Without defencemen Gilmore of the Copperheads, who was also called up to Drumheller, the Snakes dug deep into their line-up, giving opportunities to rookies and Coaldale Cobra affiliate netminder Dayton Bannab.
After two periods the Copperheads were up 7-2 with Wilks guarding the mesh. The strong lead gave coaches Frank Fazio and Cody Moskal an opportunity to expose Bannab to some junior hockey experience as Coaldale eventually downed the Stampeders 10-5. Carter Little Shields tallied a hat trick, with Odland and Kyle Sargeant adding two a piece. Singles from Josh Elliot, Regan Camrud and Devery Edmonds.
Coaldale strung its third consecutive road win together with a 5-4 overtime victory over inter divisional rivals Strathmore Wheatland Kings, last Saturday night. Levi Wiebe, James Foxall, Cam Hurt, Thomas Chapman and Sargeant all tallied for Coaldale.
Sunday saw the Coaldale crew head out to Medicine Hat for the most important game of the season. The Copperheads and the Cubs are in the race for second place in the South division, meaning home advantage in the upcoming play-offs. The way the it looks now, the Snakes will quite possibly tangle with the Cubs come late Februarys first play off round.
Going into the game Coaldale was two points behind the Cubs with one game in hand. A first period fumbled puck clearing attempt from goaltender Bloor resulted in a empty net tally to start the Cubs scoring off. The Copperheads fought back and after the second period were still down 2-1, after a power play marker from Odland. The third period was all Cubs as their relentless forecheck and physical play resulted in 8 unanswered goals for a final 10-1 decision. Looking ahead the Copperheads have a three game weekend coming up including at home Saturday against Red Deer at 8:30 p.m. at the Coaldale Snakepit, then off to Stettler Sunday to face the Lightning. Fans are reminded that there are only four regular season home games left to use season tickets.

COPPERHEADS PROMOTE ASSISTANT COACH The Coaldale Copperheads executive would like to announce that they have promoted assistant coach Frank Fazio to the Head Coaching position for the upcoming 2009-2010 season.
This will be Frank's second year with the organization. He will be replacing Mark Forth, who has moved to Australia.
The Copperheads wish Mark the very best and look forward to another season of hard work and exciting hockey with Frank as head coach.

A couple of numbers at the piano by Coaldale’s Theo Tams topped off the evening as the Coaldale Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual awards and appreciation night Saturday evening.
The Gem of the West Museum was the setting for this year’s event and it was a capacity crowd on hand to recognized a host of awards including the Special Tribute award for Tams. He traveled from Toronto, where he is recording his debut CD, to Coaldale before continuing on to Vancouver Sunday for the Junos.
“I’m that small town kid,” said Tams.
He still can’t believe all that has happened in his life in the past six months since he won the 2008 Canadian Idol title. His weekend trip home to Coaldale was the first time he’s been back in town since visiting his family for Christmas. He is a few days away from recording his final three songs on his “Give it all away” CD which is set for a May 19 release.
“We are so, so close.”
He said coming home to Coaldale Saturday was a like a breath of fresh air for him. The past three months he’s spent recording his album have been the longest time he’s been away from home since his volunteer time in India a few years ago. It has also been the longest time he’s spent away from his best friend, Melissa Reimchen, who has stayed in contact by phone and email with Tams. He said he was humbled by the recognition from a community that was behind him throughout his Idol run. He said it may seem odd but he still feels like he hasn’t wrapped his head around everything that has happened to him in the past year.
In addition to working on his album he is also putting a band together for the tour for the CD which is expected to start at the end of June. He is also anticipating doing a number of summer festivals.
“Whoop Up Days here I come.”
He said he has also enjoyed working with other talented musicians and songwriters such as Sarah Slean and Hawksley Workman. He has appreciated the hands-on approach to the album afforded him by his label which allowed him to co-write at least half the songs on the album.
“I really couldn’t ask for anything more from a label.”
Saturday he was thrilled to be back in Coaldale but was also looking forward to the Junos on Sunday. He was excited to walk the red carpet and see a different aspect of the music industry.
“It won’t hit home until I’m there. I’m just excited to celebrate Canadian music.”
In his presentation to Tams, Mayor Kim Craig said last summer the young musician took to the spotlight on Canadian Idol and brought national attention to Coaldale.“You know you’ve accomplished something when two communities and a university lay claim to this young man.”
Craig said it may have taken only a few months for Tams to take the Idol title but he’s been performing and writing music for years. Even when he was busy visiting his family during a break from the competition he took time out to visit with students at Jennie Emery and R.I. Baker.
The Coaldale chamber handed out five additional awards during the evening including Citizen of the Year which was presented to Vaughn Caldwell, who manages the local food bank. Clarence Belter introduced the award praising Caldwell for his commitment, not only to the food bank, but to Coaldale in general.
Belter said he couldn’t thank Caldwell more for what he has done in Coaldale. Caldwell was responsible for initiating several fundraisers in the community including the annual Duck Race in support of the food bank. He also spearheaded the free pancake breakfast during communityfest.
In accepting the award an emotional Caldwell said he didn’t know how deserving he was of the award and he was quick to recognize the numerous volunteers who help out both at the food bank and with other community projects.
The Group Citizen of the Year was presented to the Copperheads junior hockey team. Kevin Neufeldt introduced the award and said the hockey team has given the community another reason to get together on a weekly or even twice weekly basis through the winter.
He said the Copperheads games bring a cross section of people from different backgrounds and different ages to the arena to enjoy some well played hockey games. He credited Kevin Wiebe as the brainchild behind the development of the team in Coaldale two years ago.
While most of the teams in the junior league are lucky to get 100 people at their home games, the Copperheads regularly draw 300 to 400 people out to their games.
“Coaldale has the best support of any team in the league.”
Neufeldt said the home town support seems to impact the team which won less than 40 per cent of its games on the road this year but won 78 per cent of its home games.
Gordon Pickles, who accepted the award on behalf of the team, said the Copperheads appreciate the fan support in Coaldale. He also praised the local businesses, the local recreation board, the town and other user groups at the arena for their support of the team.
“This team wouldn’t be what it is without the community support.”
The Customer Service award was presented Saturday evening to Bonnie Chartier who has made a name for herself in the service sector in Coaldale. Currently working at the Coaldale Bakery, Chartier was praised by Andy Van Rijn as he made the award presentation. He said her dedication to customer service has stayed with her through her different roles in businesses in Coaldale. He noted the coffee pot had to be forcibly removed from her hand so she could give birth to her fourth child. He added there were probably not many people in attendance Saturday night who have not had a meal catered by Chartier at some point in their life. Van Rijn said it’s obvious Chartier enjoys working with the public and in addition to being a great mom to her four kids and she is also involved in her church.
“She bakes the best chocolate pie I’ve ever eaten.”
Chartier was a woman of few words Saturday simply expressing her appreciation for the honour.
Chamber president Doreen Lloyd presented the Chamber Member of the Year award Saturday evening to Mayor Kim Craig, who has continued to support the chamber in all of its endeavours even while serving on town council.
Lloyd said he has worked hard on many levels on behalf of the town and the chamber.
“When you do something you love, it’s not work,” said Craig in accepting the award.
He also shared the honour with his wife and family who he said continue to support him even when he takes on additional responsibilities.
The Business of the Year award was presented to Daryl Tonin of Stop ‘N Go by long time friend Jack Penner who received the same award from Tonin in 2006. Penner said he was happy to return the favour and praised Tonin for his commitment to Coaldale.
He said Tonin sponsors a number of chamber projects including the annual parade, golf tournament and the awards night. The two businessmen have known each other since kindergarten but Penner noted, “it was only two days a week so I didn’t get to know him that well”.
The two have been friends for close to 40 years and Penner said while Tonin is always the witty one, he often finds himself the butt of the joke. Tonin was quick to admit he was overwhelmed by the honour.
“There are a number here who are worthy of the award, that’s why it took 22 years,” he said jokingly for him to be honoured.
“I enjoy doing business in Coaldale,” he said. “It’s been an adventure.”
He suggested the reason he was being honoured Saturday was because he is more popular now that gas has gone below a dollar a litre. He also had praise for both the chamber and town council for their commitment to Coaldale. He also thanked the residents of Coaldale for supporting local businesses.
The chamber also honoured local businesses during the evening with its Years of Service Recognition. Coaldale Dental Centre was honoured for 35 years; Coaldale Iron Products and Total Automotive for 25 years; Coaldale Funeral Home Ltd., Coaldale Vision Centre, Kim Craig- Quintus Financial, Four Seasons Home Comfort, Good Health Dispensary, Hair Alberta Style and InfoMarket Group GMAC Real Estate for 15 years; Advantage Roofing Ltd., Compu-Care Compute Service and Suzanne’s Hairstyles for 10 years; and Newhouse Construction Inc., Paterson Photography, Tuxedo Steam Cleaners, Good Health Massage and Montaro Canada Inc. for five years.

COPPERHEADS HEAD INTO PLAYOFFS Junior hockey action in Coaldale heads into playoff action this weekend.
The Coaldale Copperheads finished up the regular season over the weekend and are slated to play the first playoff game this Saturday, Feb. 21 at 8:30 p.m.
The first round is expected to be against the Medicine Hate Cubs but there is a slight chance, given weekend results, the Copperheads will face the Okotoks Oilers.
The first round of playoffs is a best of three series with this Saturday being the only home game of the series. Tickets for the playoff game are the same price as regular season admission.
The Coaldale Kinsmen recently provided the team with a portable skate sharpening machine which can be used both at home and on the road for away games.
The machine is valued at about $3,500.

COPPERHEADS WITHIN 2 OF DIVISION FIRST PLACE The Coaldale Copperheads are within two points of clinching first place in the mountain division of the Junior Heritage League.
Weekend action saw the Snakes play two inter-divisional rivals, starting with the High River Flyers on Friday night in High River. With five minutes remaining the shot clock showed 34-16 and the score 4-3 both in favour of the Copperheads. A flurry of Flyer offence and a lack of Coaldale defence ended the game in favour of High River 6-4 on an empty netter. Scoring for Coaldale was Josh Elliott, Braedon Horon, Mark Lauer and Trevor Klassen.
Saturday the Snakes traveled to Strathmore. The Elliot, Horon and James Foxall line had another strong game with one each to pace the Copperheads to a 4-3 victory. League-leading goal scorer Cam Hurt added his 38th.
Friday, the Copperheads are in Claresholm to battle the Storm, with the next home game Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m. against the Medicine Hat Cubs, which is looking like a preview to the first round of play-offs Feb.16, a best-of-five affair.

SNAKES IN A RINK - Lethbridge Herald Introducing the top-ranked Coaldale Copperheads. And for Copperheads players and fans alike, the key word is top-ranked. Oh, and Coaldale.
As the Junior B hockey team heads into its second season of play in the Heritage Junior Hockey League, the community 10 minutes east of Lethbridge is happy to have a hockey team they can call their own.
That the team is also in first place in the league’s Mountain Division with a 17-10-0-1 record helps.
“For season number two, being this new to the league, I think it’s going awesome,” said Copperheads head coach Mark Forth. “We had a pretty decent turnout of guys coming out to camp and it’s only going to get better. We probably have one of the best organizations in the league. So everyone is happy with the way things are going.”
While the Copperheads wound up on the wrong side of a 4-2 decision as they hosted the Banff Academy Bears Saturday night, the local squad has awarded the hometown faithful with a winning season.
Saturday's loss aside, the Copperheads are in first place in the Mountain Division and sixth overall in the 16-team league.
“In our first year we weren’t too bad,” said Copperheads general manager Kevin Wiebe. “We were about .500 and now in our second year we’ve gained a reputation in the community for the organization.”
Having one of their players in the top 10 in league scoring sure hasn't hurt either with Copperheads sniper Cam Hurt sitting in eighth place in Heritage League scoring with 38 goals and 56 points in 27 games.
“It’s been great,” said Hurt, who opened the scoring Saturday night with a first period goal. “We've been here for two years and our fan base is growing. Every night you see more and more fans out. They’re good fans. The midget kids and high school kids (come out) and parents travel out from everywhere. They’re so supportive. I think we’ve only lost twice this year at home or maybe three times. It’s the best place to play.”
The seed for the Copperheads franchise was planted with the folding of the Lethbridge Southern Express.
This team kind of rolled out of the ashes of that,” said Wiebe. “It was a tough go in Lethbridge. They didn’t have a home rink.”
That's when the GM saw the potential for a Junior B franchise in Coaldale.
“I played Junior B and I saw the potential in Coaldale so I headed it up and it worked out well,” said Wiebe.
The community wasted no time jumping on board.
“The town and businesses have gotten behind it,” said Wiebe. “To run a team like this it takes about $80,000 a year, maybe a little more. Through sponsorship and donations the town has really taken a hold of the team and made it an identity to itself.”
Getting a good view of the hometown fans from his perch behind the bench, Forth marvelled at the hometown support the Copperheads have been treated to.
“It’s been awesome,” he said. “The rink was almost full (Saturday). When we go up north to other clubs they only get 30 or 40 people at the games. Fan wise, it’s been awesome. It’s been the talk of the town. It’s something for them to do on a Saturday night.”
Community support aside, there's still some hockey to be played as the Heritage League starts into the playoff stretch drive.
For Hurt, it's not only a drive into the post season as the team looks to build on its first-round elimination last season, it's also a comeback.
“I took last year after being out with mono,” said Hurt, the 19-year-old forward who hails from Bow Island.
“I was rejuvenated, came out and I’ve been having fun ever since. It’s a great bunch of guys . . . We can beat any team in the league, we just have to work on our consistency.”
After sitting out last season to battle his second stint of mono, the Copperheads put the feelers out to Hurt to see if he would be able to lace up this season. The drive to compete was still there.
“I had started school and the itch just kind of grew,” said Hurt. “Anytime I got on the ice last year I found that I was really eager. When this year came around I wanted to get back at it.”
Among the top six teams in the league, the Copperheads have put themselves in a position to contend.
Looking long term on the Copperheads chances, Wiebe remained realistic.
“I think if we can go a couple of rounds in the playoffs we’ll be very pleased with that,” he said. “I don’t know if we have quite the team for a league championship, but we have one the best teams in the league this year, so you never know.”
With a roster chock-full of veteran players, the hunger to charge for a league title isn't lacking.
“They all want to win,” said Forth. “They get excited to win and they want to do something with this team. We have quite a few older guys who might not be around next year.”
The Copperheads were in Medicine Hat to face the Cubs Sunday and are back on the road Friday as they head to High River to square off with the Flyers.
Coaldale's next home game is Feb. 7 when the Flyers pay a visit.

Copperheads Sign Forward The Coaldale Copperheads have signed forward Dustin Brosz.

COPPERHEADS COME UP SHORT IN PLAYOFFS The Copperheads hosted the Okotoks Bisons Saturday night in Game 3 of the best of 5. Coaldale only managed to put 2 goals past the Bisons goaltender. The goals from Justin Barnes and Levi Wiebe were not enough to win the game however, as the Bisons responded with 6 of their own. Mike Wilk made 46 saves in the loss for Coaldale.
The Copperheads then traveled to Okotoks Sunday for the fourth game of the best of five series. The Copperheads once again came up on the short end with goals from James Foxall and Ty Daychief. The Bisons managed to get 5 goals past the Copperheads goaltender Mike Wilk. Wilk made 34 saves in the loss.
The Okotoks Bisons win the Best of Five series 3-1.
The Copperheads would like to thank the fans, community, volunteers and sponsors for all their support. We look forward to another great year ahead. Information regarding the team can be found on this website.

Coaldale Copperheads Lose Snake Fight By One Copperheads faced off against the Red Deer Vipers Saturday losing 5-4 as the Vipers took advantage on numerous power play opportunities in the third period to score three unasnswered goals. Copperheads go Bear Hunting, and win 10-5 !!! The Copperheads hosted the Banff Academy Bears Saturday night at the Snake Pit. The Copperheads entertained their sponsors with a wine and cheese event during the game in appreciation for all their support during the 2007-2008 season. After the first period the score was tied at one. The Copperheads came out flying in the second and were able to put 7 goals past the Banff goaltender. Banff managed only one gaol during the second leaving the Bears down 8-2 heading into the third. Banff came back hard in the third putting 3 goals behind Coaldale's Stefan Migotti. Coaldale potted two of their own and at the end of the game the Copperheads earned the win 10-5. Justin Barnes led the Copperheads with 3 goals and 2 assists. James Trentini, Mike Soroff, Sean Culbert, Trevor Klassen, Arric Stafford, Jon Deagle and Braden Dyck each had multiple points in the victory. Stefan Migotti had 24 saves in net for the win. Copperheads Lead Division The Coaldale Copperheads have been dominating the opposition as of late.
The local Junior club has secured a three-point lead over the Claresholm Storm, leading the Mountain Division with 23 points.
On Saturday Jan. 5, the local squad headed up to take on the Blackfalds Ford Wranglers who are currently sitting in 2nd place of the tough Lake Division. The Copperheads went into the dressing room in the first intermission after dominating the Wranglers 2-0. Scoring for the Copperheads were Justin Barnes from Jon Deagle, and Trevor Klassen from James Foxall and Levi Wiebe. A tough second period saw the Copperheads go behind 3-2. The Copperheads rallied in the third with Wiebe working down low with a give and go with Foxall which resulted in a top shelf, tying goal for Wiebe with 4:50 remaining.
A hooking penalty from Mike Soroff late in the third period sent out Deagle and Barnes out to penalty kill. Deagle chipped the puck up the boards to a speeding Barnes. The Blackfalds goalie rushed out of the net to clear the puck but was out skated by Barnes who then took the puck at an extreme angle and hit the post. As the puck twirled across the crease in what seemed to be eternity, Barnes took a hit from a Blackfalds defender, after which he recovered and skated around the back of the net to dive out in front to knock the winning, short handed goal in, just as the hapless Goaltender was sliding across the crease. With only 2:19 remaining the Copperheads secured the dramatic win over last years league and provincial champions. Mike Wilks was stellar in net with 35 saves for the win.
The road swing then took them to west to take on the Rimbey Rock. The Copperheads previously had beat the Rock 3-2 at home. Warm-ups saw starting goalie Wilks injured, so the Stefan Miggotti got the nod. The first period was sluggish for the local boys as they went into the first intermission down three to one on a goal from Barnes assisted by Deagle and Braden Dyck. In the second period things turned around as the snakes put heavy pressure on the Rock. Great goaltending was finally cracked by Ty Daychiefs top corner rocket, assisted by Dyck and Arric Stafford.
Going into the third period down 4-2 the Copperheads were relentless, out shooting the hometown Rock 17-3 to no avail, as the Rock scored one unanswered goal late in the third to cap the win 5-2. Copperhead stats show the shots as 41-20 for Coaldale.
This last Saturdays game on Jan. 12 saw the Copperheads welcome the Ponoka Stampeders to the Snakepit. Early first period action seen the visitors take an early 2-0 lead with the the Copperheads keeping it close with a late period goal. Defensemen Matt Pomrienke took a pass from newcomer Matt Klatt, putting a low blast on goal which was tipped by Sean Culbert.
During the first break Co-Coach Mark Forth verbally displayed his displeasure with the home boys effort and the locals responded in the second period. Hot goaltending was an issue again as the Copperheads peppered the Stamps goalie with 16 shots with one goal from Barnes assisted by Lee Geers and Dyck. The third period saw the the Copperheads totally dominate the Ponoka crew, outshooting them 19 to 7 with three unanswered goals. Brent Mehrer from Josh Elliott started it of only one minute and 33 seconds in with Mike Soroff, scoring 45 seconds later, from Barnes and Piecharka. Geers iced the win late in the third with an awkward angle goal high over the goalies left shoulder.
The Copperheads established a new team record for shots on goal with 50, Ponoka replying with 27 shots on Wilks. The team has a road swing next weekend facing first place Stettler Lightning and Didsbury's Mountainview Colts, one of the toughest barns to play in the heritage league.
Next home game is against the Banff Bears Saturday Jan. 26, at 8:30 pm featuring a wine and cheese sponsor appreciation night.

END OF 2007 COPPERHEADS UPDATE The month of November the Copperheads found they were on an eleven game losing skid (excluding one win over the last place team Banff (1-17-0) At this time the Copperheads executive decided a coaching change was needed. Assistant coaches Mark Forth and Justin McCool have taken over the Copperheads as of Dec. 1/07. Since the coaching change the Copperheads have elevated their record to .500 with four wins, four losses and one tie. Of these four losses all but the game against Airdire were very close scoring games. With these latest stats as of the end of Dec. the Copperheads have pulled into first place in the Mountain Division in the Southern Conference of the Heritage League.
Recent roster additions include rookie defensemen Mike Brown, who played on the Taber Golden Suns Midget AA in the 06/07 season. As well, the injury to overage James Trentini has opened an opportunity for veteran defenseman Arric Stafford to help shore up the Copperheads blue line. Stafford, also an overage, has been practicing with the Copperheads since early October, as a summer surgery made an appearance at try-outs in September impossible. Other injuries at the time being include forward Trevor Klassen and rookie defenseman Logan Mackintosh.Klassen should be in the lineup for the upcoming road swing to Rimbey and Blackfalds this upcoming first weekend of Jan. 2008. Mackintosh is slated for return in mid-Jan.
The Copperheads are currently in the mountain division with 19 pts. The power play continues to flounder, with a 16.2%, last overall of the 16 teams in league. Penalty killing is another matter, where a respectable 81% is good for sixth overall.
With only four home games left and seven away, the team is looking for a solid finish...setting a goal of keeping the first overall position in our division. This would be beneficial spot, as first place would play the last place of the Foothills division for playoffs. First round play-offs are a best of five affair.
Throughout Christmas home games the Copperheads collected non-perishable items for trade of $5 admission to the game. The overage players forwarded the items to the Coaldale Food Bank for their needs. During these games the team had stocking stuffers for sale and held a silent auction. For more community awareness the Copperheads in January are going on a bottle drive and providing a wine/cheese evening for their sponsors during one of their home games.
As the 2007-year has gone by the Copperheads are very thankful for the opportunity to have joined the Heritage League. They are pleased with the quality the league provides and are looking forward to continuing being competitive and bringing enjoyment to our hometown community.

Copperheads encourage fans to give back to community In an effort to encourage local hockey fans to help stock the shelves of the Coaldale Food Bank, the local junior hockey team traded food donations for game admission over the holiday season.
Throughout the Christmas season the Copperheads accepted food donations in trade for the $5 admission to home games. Overage players on the team forwarded the donated items to the local food bank to help families in need in the community.

Coaldale took the game by a 6-3 score with goals by Jon Deagle from Braden Dyck and Arric Stafford, by Justin Barnes unassisted, from Dyck from Barnes and Deagle, from Ty Daychief from Deagle, from Dyck from Barnes and from Josh Elliott unassisted.

Copperheads in Coaldale - Posted in Lethbridge Herald COALDALE ? The Coaldale Copperheads are definitely a work in progress. Evidence on display Sunday showed the first-year Heritage Junior Hockey League franchise is making plenty of progress ? both on and off the ice.
Copperheads were bested 5-4 in the Coaldale Sportsplex Arena by the Cochrane Generals. Cochrane improves to 19-5 (38 points), while Coaldale goes to 6-14-3 (15 points.) The standing differential was certainly not evident in the flow of play. In fact, the Copperheads led in shots on goal 37-27.
The game was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes, with the Generals assuming narrow command 3-2 following two frames. The home troop almost tied the encounter with 1.3 seconds left, only to be foiled on the doorstep at the end of a frantic power-play attack.
Levi Wiebe, Brent Mehrer, Josh Elliott and Braeden Dyck scored for the home team. Dyck added an assist, with other helpers earned by Justin Barnes, James Foxall, Kash Shade, Arric Stafford, Jon Deagle and Sean Culbert. Stephan Migotti guarded the cage.
The Heritage circuit (www.heritagejuniorb.com) is a 16-team Junior B loop with franchises ranging north almost to Edmonton. Coaldale is in the Southern Conference's Mountain Division along with Claresholm Storm, High River Flyers and Banff Academy Bears. Copperheads occupy the second rung.
The Heritage rules allow each team to carry four 21-year-olds (termed "overages") and Coaldale has a full complement of 1986-born performers on board. The other Copperheads range from 18-20 years old.
The team is filled with players who capped their minor hockey careers at the Midget AAA, AA and A levels. A few have Alberta and Saskatchewan Junior A league experience. Away from the rink some Copperheads hold down full-time jobs, while others are full-time students at either Lethbridge College or the University of Lethbridge.
There was almost no Junior B team in the area this year. The Southern Express, who had led a nomadic existence, folded over the summer. Copperheads had their first organizational meeting August 16 and were playing league games in just over six weeks.
A determined Coaldale-centric board, consisting of president Kevin Wiebe, general manager Gord Pickles, treasurer Gord Elliott, Kelly Wiebe, Don Foxall and Kevin Fujita are at the forefront. The Wiebe's and Foxall have children on the roster. All obviously have the best interest of the enterprise as a whole at heart.
"Last year I traveled with the team and saw how successful the league was in some small towns so when the Express failed I thought Jr. B would be a good fit in Coaldale," said Kevin Wiebe, himself a former Lethbridge Y's Men's Native Son Jr. B player in the early 1980s.
It's no trivial pursuit. The budget, prominently including transportation and ice rental, is "about $60,000." Each player was assessed a $1,000 bill (still less than many elite minor outlets) and the board is supplementing that investment in almost every way imaginable.
"Bustin' our ass," was Wiebe's frank appraisal.
The taxidermist quickly credits the Coaldale business community, including most prominent sponsor Info Market GMAC Group Real Estate, for backing the cause. Patrons (and there were about 200 on hand Sunday in a game that helped support the town's Food Bank) are charged admission and pay for programs. As well, a 50-50 draw and silent auction were visible and pushed. In addition, a wide array of colourful Copperhead logo-adorned paraphernalia, including toques, hats, fleece jackets, golf shirts, stickers and mini sticks could be acquired.
"In five years I want no added player fees for sure, and some added perks as far as equipment goes," said Wiebe. "We want to give (players) a place to play, but at the same time we give them an avenue to further their game if they want. What we really want to do is to provide a good life experience for these guys."
The team has plenty of elite playing experience behind the bench with former Western Hockey League players Mark Forth and Justin McCool co-coaching.
The on-ice leader is 21-year-old captain and leading scorer Justin Barnes. The Lethbridge Athletic Association and Winston Churchill graduate played three campaigns for the Southern Express.
"It's a lot better out here than it was," said Barnes, a SportChek employee, after Sunday's encounter. "It's organized and we actually have a fan base. That's huge. That was ultimately the downfall before. No money coming in."
Copperheads have scored 79 goals and given up 100 in the regular season. Most losses have been tight and they've beaten the defending league champ from Okotoks. Every team makes the playoffs and Coaldale's skipper is looking forward to ending his Jr. B career in style.
"We just want to have a good season and make some noise in the playoffs. We're close every game. We just have to figure out that one thing that's going to make us win big."
The board certainly aspires to that goal ? and a whole lot more ? down the road. They'd love Coaldale's snakepit (elite town minor teams are called the Cobras adding to the serpentine theme) to be a long-term Copperhead den.
"I hope to see them here 30 years from now," said a smiling Wiebe.
